Pen on Fire
I have chosen a book called Pen on Fire, by Barbara DeMarco-Barrett. I love this book. She is around my age and describes a busy life that includes kids, a husband, hosting a radio show, editing, and teaching writing courses at a college. She says she used to get sidetracked by the myth that 'as soon as I get time I will write.' I feel the same pressure. I claim to sit down as soon as time presents itself. She says that you have to take time rather than wait for it. She subscribes to carrying around a note book to jot down notes, poetry, etc. every free moment she finds - waiting in the doctor's office for her appointment, waiting on her kids when picking them up. Five, ten, fifteen minutes here and there gives you more writing then not writing till she has the time. I've tried this this week and guess what! It works for me.

Carrying a small notebook is a great idea--and I try to remember to do it--occasionally. It is also helpful to keep a dictionary nearby. I find myself needing to look up words frequently so I keep a dictionary in my car. My little short-fused brain can't remember things very long unless I write them down. Some folks keep an open Bible in their homes. I keep an open dictionary.
ReplyDeleteI'll try to help you out w/ your sewing but I'm slow & my arthritic fingers sorta limit me. Ah, old age!
I bet that is helpful instead of making yourself sit down for hours and while trying to write you are thinking about all the other things you could be doing. I bet it is better to write in small intervals when you have time or when you think of something. I think that is some good advice.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad to hear that someone has actually tried this method and that it worked. It works for me and reading, so why shouldn't it work for writing?
